For hundreds of years Horezu pottery is being made in the small village from northern Valachia. The quality of materials, the care taken for all the process stages and especially the artisans’ aesthetic feeling brought the reputation of Horezu pottery.
The birth of a Horezu pot
The clay and white earth are brought from a hill nearby and the superior clay is bought. The red and brown colors can be found in the proximity of the neighboring village (Vaideeni) and green is obtained from copper, through o traditional technique.
Clay preparing is made with intensive care, which explains its quality. After it is brought, the clay is deposited and left to yeast. The yeasting means the breaking of big clay balls into small particles for a very good manufacture. This is made through the wetting – drying process and through repeated separation. Cleaning the clay is done carefully, by cutting it into very thin slices. The last one is the kneading, process witch in the past was made with the feet.
The pot is being shaped on the wheel of the potter. The light background is applied on the pot before it is dry; the adornment is painted on this. The instruments used to make the ornaments with is the cow horn (filled with paint) and the quill (a goose feather through which the paint flows from the horn).
The pot is left to dry, then it is baked for the first time. The baking takes place in traditional kiln, made of clay bricks and twigs. After this the pots are covered with a material that becomes enamel on the second baking.
Colors, motifs, techniques
The most frequently used colors in Horezu are brown, orange-red, green and lately even blue. Light colors are preferred for the background.
The motifs are varied and many of them were preserved through time, even if they suffered changes in their representation. The most frequently used are the spiral, the star, the cock, the snake of the house, the tree of life, the wavy line (the lost way), concentric circles, and the wheat ears.
The traditional painting method called «jiravirea» is a special technique used for adornment. This is made by joining the edges of a spiral with its center, while the paint is still wet. This technique allows the making of an infinite number of models that result from the combination of the colors that appear in a spiral and through the different styles through which this traditional painting method is done.
